The oldest newspaper in Malaysia traces its roots back to a weekly journal printed in 1845. Then the Straits Times, it has gone through several transformations most significantly, the name change to New Straits Times and downsize from a broadsheet to a compact version. Its strong conviction for a stable, progressive nation-building brings to its audience a rich editorial content that has garnered huge following of movers and shakers, and key decision makers, paving the way to a united and progressive Malaysia.

4.1 Community
Harian Metro Titipan Kasih

This annual event has taken on different forms; from kenduris, gotong-royongs, and donations to underprivileged families and children during the month of Ramadhan.

This year, we changed the format slightly. Instead of a one-off assistance, we give monthly assistance to the less fortunate.

NSTP Charity Fund

It's bad enough being ill. But being ill and not being able to afford medical treatment, now that is a crime. This was why the NSTP Charity Fund was set up 19 years ago. Since then, we have given out RM3.9 million to help poorly children suffering from heart problems and cancers and also the disabled.

This fund is close to our heart. We work with corporate bodies, small businesses, doctors and most importantly the readers who support it financially.

CEO & Celebrity Charity Tennis

This is one of our favourite events where we see young players battling the crème-de-la-crème of society in energetic tennis matches. It is a win-win event for all; we get to raise money for the NSTP Charity Fund and everyone gets to rub shoulders while enjoying the beautiful game of tennis.

In just three years since it started, we have collected RM235,000.

Visits to Orphanages & Old Folks Home

Always remember those less fortunate. This is why visits to various homes in Malaysia are important to us so we can bring some love, joy and company to these lovely people. In return, they teach us humility, generosity and respect.

Save Our Beach

Thankfully, it was nothing like the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. But the slicks in Teluk Ramunia, Pengerang, Johor in May last year was cause for concern. About 100 staff from NSTP and our parent company Media Prima Bhd made a special trip down south to clean the beach.

A whole day of shovelling saw a total of 1,000 bags containing oil and sand collected.

4.2 Education
RHB NST National Spell-It-Right Challenge

This is Malaysia's very own spelling bee. Children from government-funded schools are challenged to spell English words correctly in two categories: primary and secondary schools.

We celebrate some of Malaysia's brightest children who show us what intelligence, camaraderie and 1Malaysia all about.

For more information, please log on to RHB New Straits Times Spell It Right Challenge website.

NST School Sponsorship Programme

We are old skool. We believe newspapers are tools for learning. In this initiative, companies and individuals 'adopt' a school listed on the Education Ministry's most needy list and pay for the newspaper subscription.

Learning English becomes fun and accessible to all.

Berita Harian Workshops and Seminars

Ace those exams: these seminars and workshops help hundreds of participants to understand and excel in major papers in the UPSR, PMR and SPM. Teachers participate in the additional 'Akhbar Dalam Darjah' workshops to learn how newspapers can be a teaching tool in the classrooms.
