With the shouts of Merdeka resounding throughout towns and villages in 1957 - the year of Independence, the people of Malaya saw the establishment of an important material newspaper - the Berita Harian.

A newspaper of the people, by the people, for the people. This vernacular newspaper served the needs of Malayans during the nationalistic era that culminated with independence and now continues to promote the dream of a people striving for an industrialized nation status of Vision 2020.

Celebrating four decades of publishing history on August 31, 1997, Berita Harian has moulded itself from a paper reflecting the thoughts and aspirations of a traditional agrarian-based society into a vibrant, exciting newspaper for the thinking person in the era of the information age.
