WHERE do you hide a tree? In a forest. But when swathes of forest are being illegally cleared, and trees carted off and shipped away, how is the deception achieved? Eventually, the forest runs out, and a big empty area remains. Surely someone will notice? Strangely, nobody seems to. Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) officers have seized millions of ringgit worth of illegally-felled timber, taken along the Jalan Simpang Pulai-Cameron Highlands area on the Perak-Pahang border and near a forest reserve in Mersing, Johor. Initial investigations have it that the loggers went beyond the time or area limits of their licences. The raids did not result in immediate arrests, because the loggers, seemingly forewarned, had left. A modus operandi has apparently been practised for some time: companies cut down more than they are permitted to, breaking the law in a way that is obvious only to those in the know.
